Surlingham Circular Walk: Idyllic Riverside Views and Classic Norfolk Pubs

England

If you are looking for one of the most charming Norfolk Broads walks that perfectly combines village history with classic English riverside hospitality, the Surlingham circular walk should be at the top of your list. Located just a short distance from Norwich, this delightful loop offers a peaceful escape through scenic country lanes, offering beautiful views without the need for deep marshland trekking.

While many walkers head straight into the fens of the RSPB reserve, we opted for an alternative route that focuses on the village’s character and its fantastic riverside connection. In this guide, we’ll take you through everything you need to know to plan your day—including where to park near the historic St Mary’s Church, how to navigate with our favourite OS Maps recommendations, and where to catch the best riverside views. Plus, if you fancy a glass of award-winning local wine after your hike, we’ve got a fantastic nearby vineyard recommendation you won’t want to miss!

Getting Started: Parking near St Mary’s Surlingham

St Mary’s Church

Surlingham is incredibly accessible, whether you are exploring Norfolk by car or relying on public transport.

For our trip, a friend kindly drove us out to the area, and we parked our car right near St Mary’s Church. The church itself is a beautiful sight, famous for its traditional Norfolk round tower and historic flint walls. Parking here puts you in a great position to lace up your walking shoes and head straight onto the village trails.

If you prefer to leave the car behind, you can easily access Surlingham via public transport from the centre of Norwich. Local bus services (such as the Konectbus Route 85) run between Norwich and Surlingham, making it a stress-free day trip for anyone staying in the city.

Village Lanes and Field Views: Navigating without the Marsh

Stepping onto the trail, our route took us away from the muddy fens and instead guided us through a lovely mixture of quiet, paved country lanes and grassy footpaths bordering open fields. It is a wonderfully relaxed walk that showcases the gentle, rolling nature of the Norfolk countryside.

Because the landscape here weaves through a patchwork of public rights of way, village roads, and private properties, we highly recommend keeping an eye on OS Maps to stay on track. For this specific area, you will want to refer to OS Explorer Map OL40 (The Broads).

One of our friends who lives in Norfolk, has OS Maps app on his phone. It allows you to track your live GPS location offline, which is incredibly useful when the trail splits between a private farm track and a public footpath. It kept our journey smooth, simple, and entirely stress-free.

Riverside Rewards: Photo Spots at The Coldham Hall and The Ferry House

The undeniable highlight of the walk is when the path opens up to meet the beautiful River Yare. Here, you will find two of the area’s most celebrated riverside establishments: The Coldham Hall and The Ferry House.

The Coldham Hall boasts a fantastic, spacious beer garden and its own private moorings. We had a brilliant time stopping to take photos of the local wildlife—including some incredibly photogenic ducks resting on the wooden decking—and admiring the sailing boats lined up along the water.

Since our friend was driving us for the day, we skipped the pints this time and focused entirely on capturing the gorgeous scenery. Even without stepping inside for a drink, the vibrant, peaceful atmosphere of these riverside pub grounds is well worth the stroll. Watching the boats lazily glide past against the dramatic Norfolk sky is pure bliss and makes for some incredible travel photography.

A Post-Walk Detour: The Award-Winning Winbirri Vineyard

To crown off a perfect day out, we highly recommend making a short detour to Winbirri Vineyard, located just on the edge of the neighbouring village.

You might not automatically associate Norfolk with world-class viticulture, but Winbirri is famous for producing award-winning English wines that rival the best of Europe. Their signature “Bacchus” white wine is exceptionally crisp and refreshing. While they offer superb vineyard tours and tastings on select dates, stopping by their cellar door to pick up a bottle or two to enjoy later at home is the absolute perfect finale to a classic Norfolk adventure.
