On a recent sunny day, a close friend who lives in Norwich took us on a wonderful local walking route. Starting near Norwich Railway Station, this path leads you through the lush canopies of Trowse Woods and around the scenic lakes of Whitlingham Country Park.
After exploring the tranquil nature trails, the route loops through the picture-postcard village of Trowse before finishing at Redwell Brewery—a hidden gem tucked away inside a railway arch, serving fantastic craft beer and wood-fired pizza. If you are looking for a perfect half-day micro-adventure, this is a fantastic local itinerary.

Leaving the City Behind: Into Trowse Woods and Whitlingham Country Park
Our journey began just a short distance from Norwich Station. It is incredible how quickly the urban landscape transitions into peaceful greenery.
Within minutes, we found ourselves entering the shaded trails of Trowse Woods, where the sunlight filters beautifully through the trees.
Following the path, the woods open up to reveal the stunning waters of Whitlingham Country Park. This area is a true sanctuary for locals and wildlife alike. As you wander along the public footpaths, you will see various waterbirds resting by the lake and hear nothing but the sound of birdsong.
One of the highlights of this section is discovering the atmospheric church ruins hidden amongst the greenery. Covered in ivy and steeped in history, these stone structures capture the timeless romance of the English countryside and make you want to slow down and just take in the moment.
A Stroll Through Trowse: A Picture-Postcard English Village
After leaving the lakeside trails, the route transitions from wild nature into the charming, historic streets of Trowse village. This village feels like it has been lifted straight from a storybook, offering a wonderful glimpse into traditional regional lifestyle.
What makes Trowse so special is its architectural character. The streets are lined with beautiful red-brick cottages and traditional buildings crafted from local flint. Walking past these beautifully preserved homes with their lovely gardens gives you a real sense of the deep history embedded in the area. It is the perfect, peaceful transition before heading towards our final destination.
The Ultimate Reward: Craft Beer and Stone-Baked Pizza at Redwell Brewery
To wrap up a fantastic walk, there is no better place to finish than Redwell Brewery & Taproom. Located just on the edge of the village, this independent craft brewery is ingeniously built into a converted railway arch, giving it a fantastic, relaxed local vibe.
Redwell is famous for its dedication to brewing high quality beers that are entirely vegan and gluten free. From crisp, refreshing lagers to characterful ales fresh from the tap, a cold drink here is the ultimate reward after a long walk.
To make things even better, they serve delicious, authentic stone baked pizzas cooked right onsite. Sitting outside under the arches, enjoying fresh pizza and excellent beer with friends, was the perfect conclusion to a lovely local walk.
