Plovdiv to Sofia by Bus: A Practical Guide to Timetables, Tickets and Terminals

Bulgaria

After spending two wonderful nights exploring the artistic streets and ancient hills of Plovdiv, it was time to move on to Bulgaria’s bustling capital city, Sofia.

While a railway connection exists between the two cities, taking the long-distance bus is widely preferred by independent travelers because services are significantly more frequent and highly reliable. The distance from Plovdiv to Sofia is roughly 150 km, and a smooth highway ride cuts the travel time down to just about 2 hours.

In this step-by-step DIY transport guide, we cover how to buy tickets, find the correct terminal, and navigate the journey with ease.

With tickets in hand, we headed out to the outdoor platforms. A small queue of passengers was already forming at the designated Sofia slip. Around 20 minutes before our scheduled 8:15 AM departure, a large, modern coach pulled into the bay.

The boarding process was quick and orderly. We loaded our large backpacks into the luggage compartments underneath the coach at no extra charge, stepped inside, and found our rows according to the handwritten seat numbers. The bus was clean, spacious, and featured a standard 2×2 seating layout. Right on the dot at 8:15 AM, the driver pulled out of the terminal.

The Smooth Journey and Arrival at Sofia Central Terminal

The 2-hour drive along the modern motorway was incredibly smooth and pleasant, offering nice views of the changing Bulgarian landscape.

As we entered the capital, the bus made two brief intermediate drop-off stops within Sofia’s outer city limits. If you are aiming for the absolute center or switching to the metro/train system, stay on until the very last stop.

We pulled into the final destination—Central Bus Station – Sofia (located right next to the central railway station)—at exactly 10:20 AM, perfectly on schedule.
