Boat Trip from Banda Neira to Hatta Island: A Practical Guide (2026 Edition)

Indonesia

One of the main reasons for us to visit the Banda Islands was to go to Hatta Island. This is our second visit to Hatta having been here four years ago.

What is Hatta Island like?

The beach at Hatta Island

Hatta Island is a small island in the Banda Sea, Maluku Province, Indonesia. It is marked on maps as ‘Rozengain Island’, but all locals call it Hatta Island (Pulau Hatta).

Public boats leave from Banda Neira for Hatta Island.

Boats leave every other day, but on days when there are few passengers and cargo, boats may not leave. Boat operations also depend on the arrival and departure of PELNI boats at Bandaneira. However, no boats leave on Fridays as this is a day of rest here.

The public boat we took

When we arrived in Banda Neira we contacted Sofiani who owns Vitalia Guesthouse, where we had stayed before on Hatta Island.

On Saturday 11 March, the day after we arrived in Banda Neira from Ambon, Sofiani said he would come to Banda Neira by public boat and we returned to Hatta Island with him.

Sofiani and Chris

It had been four years since we had seen each other, but his smile had not changed one bit! After shopping in Banda Neira, we boarded the public boat with him and left at 1pm.

The public boat between Banda Neira and Hatta Island leaves Hatta Island between 7am and 8am and returns from Banda Neira around 1pm.

The journey from Banda Neira to Hatta Island takes about an hour. Locals paid Rp 35,000 one way, while foreigners are charged Rp 100,000.

The Golden Rule for 2026: Trust your guesthouse host, not Google Maps

In a region where digital schedules don’t exist, your most reliable source of information is the person running your accommodation. As of 2026, the ‘Banda Rhythm’ still dictates that boat times are confirmed the evening before via local word-of-mouth. Always ask your host to double-check the departure time for you.

10-day stay on Hatta Island

Vitalia Guesthouse

On Hatta Island, we stayed at the Vitalia Guesthouse for ten days. We had a seaview bungalow and three meals were included in the price. There are no restaurants on Hatta Island, so all guesthouses offer rates that include meals.

The attraction of Hatta Island is that there is a drop-off 10 metres from the beach where you can swim and enjoy snorkelling.

Of course, you can also relax on the beach and enjoy fishing with Sofiani.

Sofiani boat

On the return trip from Hatta Island to Banda Neira, we took Sofiani’s boat from Vitalia Guest House.

It was not a boat charter as such and we paid more or less the same price as the public boat, i.e. 100,000 rupiah per person, if you take it when he goes to Banda Neira.

For the same price, Sofiani’s boat is more comfortable than the public boat. However, his boat has no roof, so be careful not to get sunburnt.

How to Book: Digital Map Accuracy & Navigation Tips

Don’t rely on your GPS—Hatta Island operates on a different grid.

Please be aware that Google Maps is notoriously unreliable once you reach Hatta Island. Due to spotty internet connectivity and a lack of digital updates, many guesthouses are pinned in incorrect locations or may not appear on the map at all. On this island, the physical reality often differs from what you see on your screen.

To navigate like a local, we highly recommend downloading an offline map (like Maps.me) or taking screenshots of your booking confirmation before leaving Banda Neira. However, the ultimate “analog” solution remains the best: once you step off the boat, simply ask the locals at the pier to point you toward your guesthouse. In a place where digital tools falter, a quick conversation is your most accurate GPS.

Booking & Finding Accommodation: The “Show Up” Method

We often receive inquiries about how to contact specific guesthouses in advance. However, due to the limited internet and unstable phone signals on Hatta Island, many local hosts simply aren’t reachable via email or booking apps.

Our recommendation? Just take the public boat and show up.

While it might feel counterintuitive in the digital age, this is the most common and effective way to find a bed on Hatta. There are several guesthouses beyond the one we stayed at, and they are mostly clustered near the main landing areas.

Why this works:

  • Availability: Unless it’s a peak holiday, there is almost always a room available somewhere on the island.
  • Selection: You can check the room, the view, and the vibe in person before committing.
  • The “Banda Way”: If one place is full, the owner will usually walk you to a neighbor’s house to find you a spot.

If you are a traveler who prefers the security of a reservation, Hatta might challenge your comfort zone. But for those ready for a true adventure, simply jumping on the public boat and seeing where you land is the best way to start your Hatta experience.

Your “Analog Ticket” to Hatta Island

Before you leave the signal behind, we have one final piece of advice to help you embrace the offline life.

Download an offline map (like Maps.me) and take a screenshot or a physical note of the guesthouse names you’re interested in. It’s a simple step, but it provides the peace of mind you need to step off that boat with confidence.

In a world where we are always connected, choosing to embrace the “inconvenience” is your true ticket to experiencing the raw, untouched beauty of Hatta Island. Enjoy the silence—it’s a rare luxury.
