After spending an extended period staying in simple, rustic homestays in Raja Ampat, returning to mainland Sorong calls for a bit of relaxation and modern comfort. To recharge before catching our onward flight, we decided to splurge slightly and stay at the four-star Vega Hotel Sorong (also known as Vega Prime Hotel & Convention).
Having stayed at this property multiple times over the years, our most recent stay was in January 2026. Arriving in Sorong by express boat from Waisai and flying out to Jakarta the following morning, the hotel’s position proved to be exceptionally convenient.
Here is our honest review of Vega Hotel Sorong, covering room comfort, manager assistance, the impressive dinner and breakfast buffets, and essential transit notes.

Location & Surrounding Area
The location of Vega Hotel Sorong is arguably its biggest asset for airport transit passengers.
It is situated just 500 metres from Sorong Airport (Domine Eduard Osok Airport), making it an easy, comfortable 5 to 7-minute flat walk to the departure terminal. Right next door to the hotel entrance is an Indomaret convenience store, perfect for stocking up on snacks, drinks, and toiletries before a long flight.
Room Comfort & Managerial Support
We initially booked a windowless Twin Room for Rp 633,000 per night (including breakfast). While the rooms show slight signs of age, they are tastefully decorated, clean, and well maintained.
Room Upgrade Experience
Upon settling into our initial room, we noticed the air conditioning unit was unusually loud and noisy. When we mentioned this issue to reception, the hotel manager, Mario, provided outstanding customer service. He personally ensured we were looked after and upgraded us to a superior room with a window (Room 522).

Room Amenities & Features
- Upgraded Room Extras (Room 522): The upgraded windowed room came equipped with a mini-refrigerator, an electronic safety deposit box, and a noticeably quieter air conditioning unit with excellent rain shower pressure.
- Standard Furnishings: Work desk, chair, wall-mounted television, bedside telephone, reading lamp, notepad, and bedside power sockets.
- Tea & Coffee Facilities: Electric kettle, complimentary bottled drinking water, instant coffee sachets, and jasmine tea bags (though the jasmine tea was rather disappointing in flavor).
- Slippers & Services: Guest slippers were provided, though they ran small for European feet. Room service and in-house massage services are also available.

Bathroom & Shower Standards
The en-suite bathrooms are clean, well lit, and adequately spacious.
- Shower Performance: The shower features a large rain shower head with consistent hot water. While the water pressure in our initial windowless room was somewhat weak, the shower pressure in the upgraded room (Room 522) was perfect.
- Provided Amenities: Toilet paper, fresh bath towels, a bathmat, cotton swabs, a shower cap, bar soap, shampoo, shower gel, and toothbrush sets with toothpaste. There is no bathtub.

Internet & Wi-Fi Reliability
Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel, with individual routers installed in guest rooms. Initially, the connection speed in our room was exceptionally fast.
However, after a heavy tropical rainstorm passed over Sorong in the late afternoon, the hotel’s main internet infrastructure went down. The Wi-Fi remained offline for the remainder of our stay. If you require continuous internet access for remote work or flight check-ins, it is wise to maintain a backup local SIM card data connection.
Dinner Experience: Saturday-Only Buffet & Breakfast Highlights
The food and beverage offerings at Vega Hotel are undoubtedly the highlight of staying here.

Saturday-Only All-You-Can-Eat Dinner Buffet (Rp 150,000 / person)
Please note that the evening dinner buffet is served exclusively on Saturday nights (until 8:30 PM) and represents outstanding value.
- Poolside Barbecue: The outdoor poolside area features live grilling stations serving fresh snapper, prawns, squid, and noodle soups in rich chicken broth, accompanied by live music.
- Indoor Buffet: The air-conditioned indoor dining area offers a wide selection including Nasi Goreng, fragrant coconut curry, fresh salads, and local desserts. Beer towers and bar drinks are also available.

Outstanding Breakfast Buffet
Served from 6:00 AM in the ground-floor restaurant, the included breakfast buffet is comprehensive and high quality:
- Hot Dishes: Freshly made Nasi Goreng, fried noodles, chicken coconut curry, and crispy fried fish with local sambal and pickles.
- Porridge Corner: Features savoury chicken porridge (Bubur Ayam) with traditional toppings, as well as sweet black sticky rice porridge in coconut milk (a personal favourite).
- Bakery & Beverages: Fresh salad bar, tropical fruits, pastries, bread, coffee, tea, iced teas, and fruit juices.

Final Verdict
Vega Hotel Sorong is the ideal choice for travellers seeking 4-star comfort, excellent hospitality, and top-tier dining before or after visiting Raja Ampat.
For around Rp 633,000, you receive high-standard amenities, a 500-metre walk to the airport terminal, responsive management, and some of the best buffet food in South West Papua. We will certainly continue to return here on future trips through Sorong!
