During our stay in Dili, the capital of Timor-Leste, we spent two nights at Hotel California.
The hotel is around 4 km from the city centre, so it is not particularly convenient for sightseeing or exploring the main dining areas on foot. However, we booked it because many hotels in Dili were already fully booked ahead of the major holiday period starting on 1 November.
Despite its location, our stay turned out to be quite comfortable. The room was surprisingly spacious, with both a double bed and a single bed, as well as a separate lounge area near the entrance. It was also well equipped with air conditioning, a fridge and plenty of furniture.
Most importantly, the room was quiet and the mattress was comfortable, allowing us to get a really good night’s sleep.
There was also an unexpected detail regarding the meals included in our Agoda booking. Although the reservation appeared to include breakfast, we later discovered that it actually came with a dinner buffet instead.
Here is my experience of staying at Hotel California in Dili.

Hotel California Location: Around 4 km from Dili City Centre
Hotel California is located approximately 4 km from the centre of Dili.
This is worth considering if you plan to explore the city on foot, as the hotel is not within easy walking distance of the main central area. You will probably need to arrange transport whenever you want to head into town. There are lots of micro buses which will take you for 50 cents.
We chose this hotel mainly because of the timing of our visit. A major holiday period was due to begin on 1 November, and many hotels in Dili were already fully booked when we were making our reservation.
With limited accommodation options available, we decided to prioritise finding a room rather than staying in the city centre.
We ended up spending two nights here, and although the location was not ideal, the quiet surroundings made it a comfortable place to rest.
Spacious Room with Plenty of Facilities

The room we stayed in was more like a family room, with considerably more space than we actually needed for two people.
It had a double bed and a single bed, plus a separate lounge area near the entrance. There was plenty of room for our luggage, and we never felt cramped during our stay.
The room included:
- Double bed and single bed
- Air conditioning
- Desk
- Refrigerator
- Complimentary bottled water
- Drinking glasses
- Table and sofa
- Dressing-table-style furniture
The mattress was particularly comfortable, which made a big difference after several weeks of travelling.
The air conditioning worked well, and having a fridge and a proper seating area was useful. Overall, the room had everything we needed for a comfortable short stay.
Another thing we appreciated was how quiet it was at night. We both slept very well during our two nights here.
Clean Bathroom with Hot Shower

The bathroom was clean and functional, with a hot shower.
There was no bathtub, but that was not an issue for us. The shower provided hot water, and the bathroom had the basic toiletries we needed.
The supplied amenities included:
- Shampoo
- Soap
- Toothbrush and toothpaste set
- Tissues
It was not a particularly luxurious bathroom, but it was clean and perfectly adequate for our stay.
Breakfast or Dinner Buffet? An Unexpected Booking Surprise

We booked Hotel California through Agoda, and our reservation appeared to include breakfast.
However, when we arrived, we discovered that the meal included with our booking was actually a dinner buffet rather than breakfast.
Apparently, the hotel had sent us a message explaining this change, but we had been offline when it arrived and had not seen it.
As a result, we missed the dinner buffet on our first evening because we did not know it was included.
We only discovered the arrangement on our second evening, when we finally made use of the dinner buffet.

It was an unexpected difference between what we had initially understood from the booking and what the hotel actually provided.
If you are booking through Agoda or another booking platform, I would recommend checking any messages sent directly by the hotel after making your reservation, particularly if your meal arrangements are important to you.
Our Verdict: Is Hotel California Worth Staying At?
Our two-night stay at Hotel California was comfortable, although the location was not ideal.
Being around 4 km from Dili city centre makes it less convenient for sightseeing, especially if you prefer to explore on foot. On the other hand, the room was spacious, well equipped and surprisingly quiet.
The comfortable mattress was another highlight, and we appreciated being able to get a good night’s sleep after travelling around Timor-Leste.
We originally chose Hotel California because accommodation in Dili was difficult to find ahead of the November holiday period. In the end, it worked out well as a place to spend two nights.
If convenient access to the city centre is your priority, you may prefer somewhere more central. However, if you are looking for a spacious room and a quiet place to stay, Hotel California is worth considering when comparing accommodation options in Dili. You get a lot of room and a good night’s sleep for your dollar.
