After touching down in Cambodia and spending our very first night soaking in the high-energy, buzzing atmosphere of the capital city, Phnom Penh, we were ready to hit the road the very next morning. Our destination was Kampong Cham, a contrasting and wonderfully sleepy town located 124 km northeast along the Mekong River.
With a population of approximately 60,000 (as of 2021), Kampong Cham is the capital of its province, yet it instantly feels worlds apart from the frantic pace of Phnom Penh. The town’s layout hugs the massive, sweeping curves of the Mekong River, giving it a beautifully laid-back, maritime charm. Here, wide streets are framed by colonial-era buildings, and the entire riverfront promenade serves as a peaceful gathering spot where the local life moves at a delightfully slow pace. It is exactly the kind of destination that invites you to slow down and stay a while.
Booking Tickets at the Virak Buntham Express Office
Buses from Phnom Penh to Kampong Cham are operated by Virak Buntham Express.
We were staying in an area of budget guesthouses near the Mekong River waterfront, from where the office is a 20-minute walk away.
We bought our bus tickets at the Virak Buntham Express company counter. It was around 11am when we arrived at the office and we were able to buy a ticket for the 12pm bus.
The fare to Kompong Cham was USD 8.8 per person. Seat numbers are printed on the ticket.
Boarding the 12-Seater Minivan and Departure
There was some time before the departure time, so we had lunch at a nearby restaurant. When we returned to the bus stop, the bus was already parked and we could get on the 12-seater minivan.
The bus left at 12.00 noon as scheduled. We stopped for a toilet break on the way.
Arrival at Kampong Cham and Next Steps
The modern minivan handled the 124 km overland route with ease, bringing us into the Virak Buntham office in central Kampong Cham at around 2:30 PM. Stepping out into the warm, tropical afternoon air, we could immediately feel the tranquil, slower rhythm of the town.
From the office, it was just a short, easy walk to our guesthouse. As we strolled through the quiet streets with our backpacks, our eyes kept drifting back to the magnificent Mekong River glistening in the sun. This arrival marked the official launch of our slow-travel adventure. With two full days ahead of us, we couldn’t wait to get our hands on some local bicycles, cross the famous seasonal bamboo bridge, and pedaling through the rustic stilt villages and lush fruit orchards that await just across the river.
