After spending a quick night exploring the layers of history in the capital city of Sofia, it was time to head northeast toward our next major destination: the medieval mountain town of Veliko Tarnovo.
While there is a railway connection between the two cities, taking the bus is widely considered the superior option for this specific route because it is significantly faster and more direct. The distance from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo is approximately 225 km, and a smooth bus ride cuts through the scenic Bulgarian countryside in just over 3 hours.
In this independent DIY guide, we break down how to buy bus tickets, avoid unexpected sell-outs, navigate the terminals, and survive the journey with zero stress.

The distance from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo is approximately 225 km and the bus journey takes about 3 hours.
Step 1: Booking Bus Tickets at Sofia Central Bus Station

Finding the Right Ticket Counter
To secure our seats, we headed to the Central Bus Station – Sofia, which is conveniently located right next to the city’s main Central Railway Station and accessible via the metro.
Inside the massive terminal lobby, there are numerous independent transport counters. Since several private companies operate buses to Veliko Tarnovo throughout the day, it’s best to look at the central departure screens or ask information to point you to the counter handling the next available departure.
Ticket Pricing, Seat Reservations, and the Sell-Out Risk
We purchased our tickets the day before departure to ensure our travel schedule stayed on track. A one-way ticket from Sofia to Veliko Tarnovo costs 22.50 BGN per person. All tickets come with assigned, reserved seat numbers.
Crucial Booking Advice: Do not assume you can just turn up and grab a seat right before departure! We booked the popular 12:30 PM bus, and by the time travel morning rolled around, the bus was 100% full and completely sold out. If you are traveling during peak hours or weekends, buy your tickets at least 24 hours in advance.
Step 2: Boarding and Luggage Logistics

On travel day, we arrived at the Central Bus Station about 30 minutes prior to our 12:30 PM departure slot. Our coach was already parked at its assigned outdoor platform, though the doors were initially locked while the driver took a break.
A few minutes later, the driver arrived and opened the large luggage bays underneath the bus. We loaded our heavy backpacks into the boot without any extra fees, showed our physical paper tickets, and boarded. The bus interior was clean and standard, featuring a classic 2×2 seating configuration across each row.
Step 3: The 3-Hour Direct Journey
The bus pulled out of Sofia precisely on time at 12:30 PM. The driver drove smoothly along the main highways, leaving the urban valleys behind as the landscape transitioned into rolling green hills and wide bulgarian plains.
Travel Note: This service is entirely direct. There are no toilet or snack breaks along the 3-hour route, and the journey is completed in one single stretch. Make sure to use the restroom at Sofia station and grab a bottle of water before boarding!
Step 4: Arrival at Veliko Tarnovo South Bus Station & Walking to Town

At 3:40 PM, right on schedule, the coach pulled into the Veliko Tarnovo South Bus Station (Автогара Юг / Avtogara Yug).
This terminal is located roughly 2 to 3 km away from the main historic old town and tourist center. While there are local taxis waiting outside, we chose to stretch our legs after the long ride. The walk to the historic center is a steady, gentle uphill stroll along the main roads. With our backpacks on, it was an easy walk, and we arrived at our pre-booked guesthouse perfectly on foot.
