We travelled by train from Nong Khai to Nakhon Ratchasima (Khorat).

Buses are available from Nong Khai to Nakhon Ratchasima, but we decided to take the train as it is cheaper and the hotel we were staying at in Nong Khai was very close to the railway station.

I will share our train journey from Nong Khai to Nakhon Ratchasima.

Boarding the train to Nakhon Ratchasima

Our train

When we arrived at Nong Khai station, the train was already at the platform. The train starts from Nong Khai and terminates at Nakhon Ratchasima.

There was a uniformed staff member in the station lobby and when I told him where we were going, he told me it was this train. I could easily recognise the train as there was a placard in front of the carriage showing the destination and departure time.

Inside a standard train car

The train only had third-class carriages with box seats and no air conditioning. I’d recommend sitting on the left hand side as you depart to avoid the afternoon sun streaming in.

Priority seating is also available

The cars were four-car trains and had some priority seating as shown in the image above.

Thanon Chira Junction railway station

The Nong Khai to Nakhon Ratchasima train stops at every station and moves quite slowly through the countryside.

We arrived at Nakhon Ratchasima at 6.30pm, almost on time. We got off at Thanon Chira Junction station, one station before the end of the line.

It was a rather long train journey, taking five and a half hours, but we were able to take our time and enjoy the Isan scenery.
