How to Book Tohoku Hotels for Half Price: Early Bird Discounts & Regional Coupons via Japanican

Japan

If you’ve been following our journey at Mai and Chris Travel, you’ll know that my wife, Mai, and I are currently in the middle of planning a domestic train journey through Japan’s stunning Tohoku region this coming September. We absolutely love exploring off-the-beaten-track destinations using regional trains and buses, but as any seasoned traveller knows, the logistics of accommodation can either make or break your travel budget.

Lately, we’ve been deep in the research phase for our Tohoku hotel bookings, and I am absolutely chuffed to report that we have managed to lock in some incredible accommodation at absolutely bargain prices. By combining early bird discounts with a brilliant regional Japanese tourism initiative, we managed to book a fantastic hotel in Morioka for literally half price!

Whether you’re planning your first trip to Japan or you’re a returning visitor looking to explore the beautiful north, here is the exact strategy we used to score cheap hotel deals in Tohoku, and how you can do it too.

Our Golden Rule: The ‘Early Bird + Free Cancellation’ Strategy

When it comes to booking accommodation in Japan, our number one strategy is always to book early, when possible.

I know what you might be thinking: “What if my itinerary changes?” or “What if I want to stay flexible?” That is exactly why we only select hotels that offer free cancellation up until a few days before the stay.

By utilizing this method, you can lock in low early bird discount rates months in advance with absolutely zero financial risk. If your train route changes or you decide to spend an extra night in a different town, you can simply cancel and rebook without paying a penny in penalties.

It was during one of these early-bird scouting sessions that we stumbled upon a little goldmine: a regional discount scheme called the “Welcome to Iwate! Coupon”.

The Big Win: Booking Hotel Ace Morioka for 50% Off

Our best result from this booking session was for our stay in Morioka, the capital city of Iwate Prefecture. We had our eyes on Hotel Ace Morioka, a highly rated property in a fantastic, central location on Chuo-dori.

Using the booking platform Japanican, we selected a Non-Smoking Semi-Double Room with free breakfast included. Thanks to our early timing, a 30-Day Early Bird Discount was automatically available, but the real magic happened when the “Welcome to Iwate! Coupon (First Round – Central & Southern Area)” was applied. This campaign slashes up to 3,000 JPY off per person, per night.

Here is the exact breakdown of our bill (displayed in Canadian Dollars, as that’s what we use for our banking):

  • Price before coupons: CAD 104.36
  • Iwate Regional Coupon Discount: -CAD 51.75 (A massive 50% off!)
  • Final Price Paid: CAD 52.61 (Approx. £30 / €35 / US$38 / 6,100 JPY)

To get a central hotel room for two people, right in the heart of Morioka with a full breakfast included on a Friday night, for just over 50 bucks is an absolute steal.

What is Japanican? (And Why International Travellers Should Use It)

If you haven’t heard of Japanican, it is a website you definitely need to add to your travel toolkit.

While global platforms like Booking.com or Agoda are great, Japanican is actually operated by JTB, Japan’s largest and most trusted travel agency group. Because it is deeply rooted in the domestic market but specifically tailored for international visitors, it offers a few massive advantages:

  1. Seamless International Bookings: The platform is fully English-optimised and processes foreign credit cards flawlessly.
  2. Access to Local Deals: It integrates Japanese regional tourism campaigns that global sites often miss.
  3. Zero Bureaucracy: Many Japanese government travel coupons require complex registration forms, Japanese phone numbers, or manual promo codes. With Japanican, the Iwate coupon was applied automatically at checkout. There were no tedious forms to fill out, and booking from overseas was completely hassle-free. Brilliant job, Iwate Prefecture!

Note: These regional coupons operate on a strict first-come, first-served basis. Once the local government budget runs out, the deal vanishes. This is why securing your room early is absolutely vital!

The Great Debate: Early Bird vs Last-Minute Hotel Deals in Japan

This is another good deal with the hotel that we booked today.

When planning a trip, people often ask us whether it’s better to book well in advance or wait for a last-minute hotel discount. Having travelled extensively, here is our honest comparison for travelling in Japan:

Early Bird Discounts (Our Choice)

  • The Strategy: Hotels offer lower rates to travellers who help them secure revenue months in advance.
  • The Pros: You get the absolute best pick of non-smoking rooms, beds, and prime locations. Most importantly, it is the only way to guarantee you catch limited campaigns like the Iwate Coupon before they sell out.
  • The Cons: Requires you to have your basic route planned out early.

Last-Minute Discounts

  • The Strategy: Hotels slash prices a day or two before the date to avoid leaving a room empty.
  • The Pros: You can occasionally get a luxury room for cheap if you are incredibly lucky. Great for entirely unstructured backpacking.
  • The Cons: In Japan, popular tourist areas and hotels near train stations fill up fast, especially on weekends or during autumn foliage season. If rooms sell out, there are no last-minute deals—only overpriced leftovers or being left with nowhere to stay. Furthermore, regional coupons are always long gone by this stage.

The Verdict

For a smooth, stress-free journey where you are relying on train timetables and want to stay in prime locations, Early Bird combined with Free Cancellation is the ultimate winner. It gives you the financial savings of a discount deal with the total peace of mind of a confirmed itinerary.

Final Thoughts

By saving so much on our accommodation, we’ve freed up plenty of budget for savouring Tohoku’s incredible regional cuisine (Wanko soba noodles are high on my list!), capturing content for the blog, and maybe picking up some beautiful local textiles along the way.

September is a magnificent time to visit northern Japan as the autumn air begins to cool the landscape. We are currently fine-tuning the finer details of our rail route, so stay tuned for more itinerary updates!
