Unfortunately, we only stayed on Biak Island for two nights. Biak Island is a charming island where you can enjoy not only snorkelling, but also sightseeing and dining. Here are some notes on the information we gathered about snorkelling and other things to do during our stay on Biak Island.
Here are some notes on the information we gathered about snorkelling and other things to do during our stay on Biak Island.
Snorkelling Spots on Biak Island
On Biak Island, snorkeling is possible mainly on the south-eastern and western shores.
Wadibu Beach
This is the actual spot where we snorkelled. On this day, there was a gentle tide from west to east, so we entered a little west of Tugu Pekabaran INJIL and drifted east.
The reef seems to be spread all over the beach around here and we were told that we could snorkel no matter where we entered, although in some places the coral is not in good condition.
South-west Coast of Biak Island
Samamber, or off the coast near Padwa, also seems to be suitable for snorkelling.
Other Islands Nearby
There are also snorkelling and diving sites on remote islands accessible from Biak Island, such as Owi Island.
Tours can be arranged at dive centres on Biak Island.
Access to Biak Island Snorkelling Spots
You can hire a scooter in Biak (Rp 100,000-150,000 per day) and get there on your own. The roads on Biak Island appear to be in good condition and the road to Wadibu beach we visited was smoothly paved.
It is possible to arrange snorkelling tours at dive centres, but they are slightly more expensive than in other areas of Indonesia.
Dive Centers in Biak
Nirmala Dive Center
The dive centre is located in the Nirmala Beach Hotel and Resort, situated on Nirmala Beach. It is run by an American owner and offers private diving and snorkelling trips. The owner is very friendly and of course speaks perfect English.
We went on a half-day snorkelling tour to Wadibu Beach, which was arranged here.
The price included transfer to and from the entry point, rest area, showers and changing rooms, snacks and drinking water for Rp 1,500,000 for two people. It was also a private tour, which is very expensive compared to the snorkelling prices we usually pay for in Indonesia!
Catalina Dive Center Biak
Located in Biak town centre, near Swiss-Belhotel Cendrawasih Biak.
The owner and staff are extremely friendly and helpful.
They mainly arrange private tours, including diving and snorkelling. On weekends, tours are also organised by shared boat.
Sightseeing in Biak
There are two so-called ‘Japanese Caves’.
