A Traditionalist’s Take on Butcombe Gold: A Proper West Country Pint

England

As someone who genuinely loves a proper, traditional British ale, I am always a bit unsure about golden ales. But this bottle of Butcombe Gold (4.4% ABV), straight from  the West Country absolutely delivers.

Here is my honest review of this Bristol-born golden ale.

The Appearance & Aroma

Pouring it into the glass, the first thing you notice is that beautiful, clear amber-gold colour. On the nose, it hits you with a lovely balance—there is a distinct citrusy sharpness from the hops, backed up by a sweet, biscuit-like malt aroma. It is very refreshing.

The Taste: Tradition Meets Innovation

What makes this particular version interesting is the “Gluten Free” label on the front. Now, as a traditional ale fan, that usually makes me raise an eyebrow. However, I was incredibly impressed. Butcombe has managed to remove the gluten without sacrificing any of the body or flavour.

The first sip gives you a burst of refreshing citrus notes, followed by a pleasant, clean bitterness that lingers just long enough. It has a fantastic crispness to it, making it incredibly sessionable, especially on a warm afternoon.

The Verdict

The branding is a brilliant nod to Bristol, featuring the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge and the hot air balloons. It’s a great visual touch, but the beer inside is the real winner.

Whether you are looking for a reliable gluten-free option or just want a well-crafted, refreshing golden ale that stays true to its West Country roots, Butcombe Gold is a brilliant choice. It gets a proper stamp of approval from a traditional ale lover.

Cheers!
