What is Hurst Castle? The Historic Solent Fortress
Originally built by Henry VIII between 1541 and 1544, Hurst Castle is an imposing fortress guarding the narrowest entrance to the Solent.
For centuries, this rugged stronghold played a vital role in England’s coastal defence. It famously served as a prison for King Charles I before his trial, and was heavily modernised during the Victorian era and World War II.
Today, it offers visitors a brilliant mix of Tudor history, massive artillery wings, and spectacular panoramic views over the Isle of Wight.
How to Get to Hurst Castle from New Milton by Public Transport

Travelling by public transport is straightforward and offers two fantastic, car-free routes depending on how you want to experience the coast:
- Option 1: Bus + Coastal Walk (For Hikers) Take the 81 bus from New Milton and get off the Beach House stop on the seafront, where you can begin the spectacular 4km (2.5-mile) trek along the shingle spit directly to the castle (please be aware that the 82 bus doesn’t go that direction).
- Option 2: Bus + Scenic Ferry (For a Relaxing Cruise) Take the 81 bus to Milford on Sea village green, then enjoy a flat, scenic 1.5km (1-mile) stroll through the salt marshes to Keyhaven. From the Keyhaven jetty, hop on the charming Keyhaven Ferry for a delightful 10-minute boat ride straight to the castle pier.
Getting the 81 Bus from New Milton

We took the 81 bus from Whitefield Road bus stop (north side of the street) in New Milton.

At the bus stop, there are 81 bus and 82 buses which both head to Lymington, but the 82 bus doesn’t go through Milford. So you need to take the 81 bus.

From New Milton to Milford it costs £3 per person. We paid using our Canadian credit card on the bus.

After going along the Barton On Sea, the bus goes towards Milford. As we wanted to walk along the beach, we got off the bus before it went into the town centre, at the Beach House bus stop.

This is the timetable for the bus going back to New Milton at the Beach House bus stop. We took a photo just in case we took a bus from here to go back home, but in the end, we took a ferry from Hurst Castle to Keyhaven and walked to Lymington where we took a bus to New Milton.
[Walking] The Hurst Spit route from Milford-on-Sea to Hurst Castle

By the Beach House, there is a small path on the grass to lead you to the beach.

After getting to the coast footpath, we walked towards the Hurst Castle Spit. Unfortunately, the weather was not good on this day. The sky was grey and the sea was quite rough. Of course, not many people about.

As other beaches in England, there are small huts lining along the Milford beach too, but again, because of the weather, no one was there.

There were some restaurants and accomodation near the waterfront.

The way to the Hurst Spit is easy; you just need to walk along the beach. At this point, you can see water both sides, right and left.

The footpath is reasonably wide, but it is covered with gravel and can be a bit hard work to walk on some places. Don’t forget your sun cream and a hat out here on a sunny day. There is no shelter from the sun!

You will see the flat concrete grey building as you walk. Although it’s called Hurst Castle it looks more looks a fortress.

It may lack a certain charm, but its solid, sprawling form has a rustic quality and exudes an atmosphere that is irresistible to lovers of ancient ruins.

You can go into Hurst Castle, although as I have been a few times we didn’t go in this time.

There is a white lighthouse by the castle.

There is a cafe in front of the Hurst Castle. It’s not big, but they have outside space.

We took the ferry from Hurst Castle to Keyhaven

In front of the Hurst Castle, there is a little landing stage of ferry where we took a boat to Keyhaven.

It says there is a ferry every 20 minutes. The price is £6 for adult. We bought single trip tickets at the ticket office of Hurst Castle.

After getting the tickets, we went to get on board. We didn’t have to wait long before departure.

The boat was not big, but we were only four passengers and a dog. It can be very busy in the middle of summer.

It was a pleasant trip for 15 mins.

We arrived at Keyhaven after about 15 minutes.

There was a proper price list there for the ferry. You can buy round trip tickets for a much better price than two one way tickets.

From here you can walk back to Milford beach, but we decided to walk to Lymington.

We walked from Keyhaven to Lymington

From Keyhaven to Lymington, it’s about 5km, which took us more than one hour because we walked slowly, taking pictures and videos.

The footpath was not too muddy on this day even though we had a couple of rainy days before.

After we arrived in Lymington, we went to a shoe shop where I bought new shoes and took a bus back to New Milton. Overall, it was a nice day trip despite the poor weather.
