We came to Atambua in West Timor as a stopover before crossing the land border into Timor-Leste. We spent one night in a Standard Twin Room at the Hotel Nusantara Dua, paying IDR 300,000, including air conditioning and breakfast.
Rather than booking through an accommodation website, we contacted the hotel directly on WhatsApp. Communication was quick and helpful, and the staff also provided information about buses to Timor-Leste.
The hotel’s communal areas looked nicely renovated, although our Standard Twin Room still felt rather dated. The room was spacious and clean, but the bathroom had only a cold-water mandi rather than a shower. Here is what we found during our stay, including the location, facilities, breakfast and a few things worth knowing before booking.

Atambua is one of the main towns in West Timor and a useful stop for travellers preparing to cross into Timor-Leste by land. There are plenty of accommodation options in town, so it is worth comparing locations and facilities according to your onward travel plans.
One reason we chose Hotel Nusantara Dua was its responsive WhatsApp service. The hotel replied quickly to our enquiries and helped us with information about buses to Timor-Leste. This was particularly useful when arranging our onward journey.
Location: Convenient for Food, Shopping and the Bus
Hotel Nusantara Dua is centrally located in Atambua, making it practical for a short stopover.
- Chinese-Indonesian restaurant: Next door
- Indomaret convenience store: Around a three-minute walk
- Timor Travel: Around a 12-minute walk
Having a restaurant next door made it easy to find somewhere to eat. Indomaret was also only a short walk away for drinks, snacks and everyday essentials.
More importantly, Timor Travel, a bus company serving the route towards Timor-Leste, was approximately 12 minutes away on foot. As we were preparing to cross the border the following day, being able to walk to the bus company was a real advantage.
The Standard Twin Room: Spacious and Clean, but Dated
Our Standard Twin Room was spacious and clean, with enough room to settle in comfortably for the night.

The hotel’s interior and communal areas appeared to have been renovated, but our room had clearly not received the same level of updating. The furnishings and overall finish felt older, so do not expect a newly refurbished room if you book this category.
The mattress was not particularly comfortable, although it was acceptable for a one-night stay.
There was air conditioning, which was welcome in the warm climate. However, we found only one electrical socket in the room. If you travel with several devices, such as phones, cameras and power banks, bringing a suitable multi-port USB charger or travel adaptor with enough connections could be useful.

Bathroom: Cold-Water Mandi, No Shower
The bathroom had a cold-water mandi rather than a shower. This was not a problem for us, but it is worth knowing if you prefer a conventional shower.
The toilet was a Western-style seated toilet, but it had to be flushed manually using water from the mandi. Toilet paper was provided.
Soap and shampoo were not supplied, so bring your own toiletries.

Wi-Fi: Usable, but Slower in the Evening
Wi-Fi was available throughout our stay, with speeds ranging from slow to moderate. It was adequate for basic internet use, but it was not especially fast.
The main drawback was the significant drop in speed during the evening. If you need to upload photographs, publish blog updates or transfer larger files, it may be better to do so earlier in the day.
Travellers who depend on a reliable, high-speed connection should consider having mobile data as a backup.
Staff and WhatsApp Communication
The staff were friendly and helpful. They appeared to speak some English, which made communication easier for international travellers.
We particularly appreciated the quick responses on WhatsApp before our arrival. The hotel also shared information about buses to Timor-Leste, helping us prepare for the next stage of our journey.
Booking directly through WhatsApp worked well for us and allowed us to ask practical questions in advance, without going through an accommodation booking platform.
Noise and Light: Things to Consider
The hotel is arranged around an inner courtyard, with chairs just outside the rooms. This layout means that conversations in the shared area can carry into the bedrooms.
We could also hear the mosque around 4 am. During our stay, the sound was moderate rather than particularly loud, although this may vary depending on your room and sensitivity to noise.
Another small issue was the corridor lighting. The lights remained on throughout the night, and light came into the room through the door, so it was difficult to make the room completely dark.
I would recommend bringing an eye mask if you prefer to sleep in a dark room. Earplugs may also be useful if you are a light sleeper. Always helpful in Indonesia in fact!
Breakfast: A Satisfying Indonesian Buffet

Breakfast was included in the room rate and served from 7 am to 9 am.
It was a buffet with a selection of Indonesian dishes, as well as sliced bread. There was also bubur, Indonesian-style rice porridge, which was a nice local option.
We enjoyed the food and found breakfast satisfying. Since we were travelling onwards to Timor-Leste that day, having breakfast at the hotel was convenient and meant we could get ready for the journey without searching for somewhere to eat.

Is Hotel Nusantara Dua a Good Choice?
Based on our experience, Hotel Nusantara Dua is worth considering if you:
- Need a one-night stop in Atambua before crossing into Timor-Leste.
- Want to walk to Timor Travel or nearby shops and restaurants.
- Prefer a room with air conditioning and breakfast included.
- Want to communicate with the hotel directly through WhatsApp.
- Value a convenient location more than modern room furnishings.
It may be less suitable if you require a hot shower, consistently fast Wi-Fi, several power sockets or a completely dark and quiet bedroom. Check the facilities carefully if any of these are essential to you.
Final Verdict: A Practical Stop Before Timor-Leste
We paid IDR 300,000 for one night in a Standard Twin Room at Hotel Nusantara Dua, including air conditioning and breakfast. Although the room felt dated and the bathroom had no shower, it was spacious, clean and adequate for our short stay.
The central location was a major advantage, with a restaurant next door, an Indomaret within a three-minute walk and Timor Travel around 12 minutes away on foot. The helpful WhatsApp communication and information about buses to Timor-Leste also made planning our onward journey easier.
I would consider Hotel Nusantara Dua a practical place to stay in Atambua before crossing the land border into Timor-Leste, especially if convenience matters more to you than modern facilities.
