ANA NH835 Flight Review: Tokyo Narita to Jakarta in Economy Class

In September 2026, we flew with ANA on NH835 from Tokyo Narita Airport to Jakarta, marking the start of our long-term travels through Indonesia.

We travelled in Economy Class and, rather than simply listing the standard specifications, we wanted to share what the journey was actually like — from checking in at Narita to the lounge, the flight itself, the in-flight meal and our arrival in Jakarta after midnight.

If you are considering flying ANA from Tokyo to Jakarta, this is our first-hand experience of NH835.

ANA NH835: Tokyo Narita to Jakarta

ANA NH835 connects Tokyo Narita with Jakarta, making it a convenient option for travellers heading from Japan to Indonesia.

For our trip, Jakarta was not our final destination. We planned to continue travelling around Indonesia, so arriving in Jakarta was the first stage of a much longer journey.

One thing worth considering when planning this route is the arrival time. Although the time difference between Japan and western Indonesia means that the local arrival time is not as late as it sounds in Japan, it still makes for a long travel day.

Online Check-in Did Not Go Quite as Planned

We completed ANA’s online check-in 24 hours before departure.

However, although the check-in process was completed, we were unable to obtain our boarding passes online.

So, after arriving at Narita Airport, we tried to print them using the airport’s self-service machines.

Unfortunately, several machines failed to read our passport information correctly.

In the end, we asked a member of staff for help, and they were able to issue our boarding passes without any further problem.

It was a slightly unexpected start to the journey, but the staff were helpful and the problem was resolved quickly.

Carry on Baggage

We did not have any checked baggage was around 9-10 kg each.

On this occasion, our luggage was not weighed at the airport and we were able to carry it in on without any problem.

Of course, this was simply our experience on this particular journey, rather than something travellers should rely on when planning their own baggage.

IASS Superior Lounge at Narita Airport

Before the flight, we used the IASS Superior Lounge rather than the ANA Lounge.

We had access through a lounge voucher provided by a Canadian bank.

The lounge had a two-hour usage limit, and it was fairly busy when we arrived. We had to wait a little before being admitted.

Once inside, there was a reasonable selection of food and we found it quite tasty.

The main drawback was the number of people. Because the lounge was busy, it was not particularly relaxing or peaceful.

The staff, however, were excellent. Their service was very attentive and professional — one of those moments that made us think, “This is Japan.”

Interestingly, Narita Airport itself did not feel particularly crowded that day.

Boarding ANA NH835 in Economy Class

We boarded NH835 in Economy Class.

Our seats were in the centre section of the aircraft, with one aisle seat and one middle seat.

The cabin looked modern and well maintained, and we were pleasantly surprised by the amount of space available in Economy Class.

For a long-haul flight, seat comfort makes a big difference, and we found the seating perfectly comfortable for the journey.

There also seemed to be a good number of toilets on board, so we never felt that access to the lavatories was an issue.

A Slight Delay Because of the Typhoon

Our departure was slightly delayed because of the typhoon affecting the area.

It was not a major delay, however, and it did not have a significant impact on our overall journey.

In-flight Entertainment on NH835

The seat-back entertainment system was well equipped, with plenty of content to keep passengers occupied during the long flight.

We did not use the onboard Wi-Fi during this journey, so we cannot comment on its performance.

For us, the entertainment system was more than sufficient for passing the time.

ANA NH835 In-flight Meal

The main meal came with a choice that was either seafood doria or sweet-and-sour pork.

The drinks selection was also varied, and we decided to have some Japanese sake during the flight.

Having a glass or two of sake while flying from Japan to Indonesia was a nice way to start the trip.

The exact meal selection can change depending on the date and flight, so it is worth checking the current ANA menu if the food is an important part of your travel plans.

Is the Tokyo to Jakarta Flight Too Long?

Even though we found the Economy Class seating comfortable, the flight was still a bit tiring.

Tokyo to Jakarta is quite a long journey, and by the time we arrived we definitely felt the effects of being on a plane for several hours.

The arrival time also makes a difference.

We entered the airport terminal in Jakarta just after midnight local time. In Japan, it was already around 2:00 am.

So while the local time in Jakarta may not sound particularly late, your body is still operating on Japanese time if you have just travelled from Tokyo.

For us, this was one of the more tiring aspects of the journey.

Arriving in Jakarta After Midnight

We entered the Jakarta airport terminal shortly after midnight.

We did not feel that the flight had been significantly delayed, so the arrival was reasonably close to schedule.

One thing that surprised us was how quick immigration was.

The immigration process used automated gates, where we simply scanned our passports. We were through incredibly quickly — faster than immigration at Narita.  You also need to prepare a QR code for Customs, preferably before arrival.  They just scan it as you leave the airport.

As we had no checked baggage to collect, we could simply continue towards the exit.

The airport was also relatively quiet at that time of night.

Getting to Our Hotel by Shuttle Bus

After arriving in Jakarta, we took the hotel’s shuttle bus.

We stayed at Orchardz Hotel, which we had previously used and were happy to return to for a second stay.

One of the main reasons we chose it again was the combination of its location and transport service.

The hotel is close to the airport and offers a free shuttle bus, which is particularly useful when arriving after midnight.

After a long flight, not having to arrange a taxi or other transport was a real advantage.

The hotel service was also efficient and straightforward, which meant we could get checked in and go to bed without much additional hassle.

We were very tired when we arrived, but we slept well.

One of the Best Features: Breakfast from 2:30 am

There was another particularly useful feature for travellers with early flights: breakfast starts at 2:30 am.

That is remarkably early, but it makes a lot of sense for an airport hotel.

Even more importantly, this was not simply a basic early-morning snack.

The buffet had an extensive selection of food and felt like a proper hotel breakfast rather than a limited early-hours offering.

For travellers catching an early flight, this can make the morning considerably less stressful.

Combined with the free airport shuttle and the hotel’s proximity to the airport, it makes the hotel a practical option for an overnight stay before or after a flight.

Our Overall ANA NH835 Experience

Overall, our experience on ANA NH835 was comfortable, particularly considering that we were travelling in Economy Class (as always!:).

The cabin felt modern, the seats were reasonably spacious, the entertainment system was well stocked and there was a good choice of drinks and food.

We also enjoyed having Japanese sake during the flight — a small detail, but a nice way to begin our Indonesia trip.

The main downside was simply the length of the journey and the late arrival.  There is also a morning flight which we gave taken before.

By the time we reached Jakarta, we were tired, and the fact that it was already around 2:00 am in Japan made the journey feel even longer.

For this reason, we would recommend thinking about what happens after the flight as well as the flight itself.

For a late-night arrival into Jakarta, staying near the airport and choosing a hotel with a free shuttle can make the end of the journey much easier.

For us, that combination worked very well: a comfortable flight to Jakarta, a quick arrival process, a short shuttle ride and a good night’s sleep before continuing our Indonesian adventure.
