The New Forest National Park in Hampshire is one of England’s most enchanting landscapes, famous for its ancient woodlands and iconic wild ponies. Many people assume you need a car to truly experience it, but it’s incredibly easy to enjoy a fantastic day trip to the New Forest from London by train, exploring completely on foot.
In this post, I’ll share a perfect 1.5-hour New Forest walking route starting right from the charming village of Brockenhurst where we got to by local train from New Milton. From there, we walked to the next railway station, Sway.
Mai and I are currently staying nearby in New Milton with my family, but this itinerary is tailor-made for anyone looking for a quick weekend escape from the capital. If you want to experience the authentic British countryside without renting a car, here is your ultimate day trip guide.

How to Get to the New Forest from London by Train (No Car Needed)
Getting to the heart of the countryside is much easier than you think. Brockenhurst is the main transport hub for the area, making it the perfect starting point for a car-free adventure.
Train from London to Brockenhurst
From London Waterloo, you can catch a direct South Western Railway train straight to Brockenhurst station. The journey takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes, meaning you’ll be stepping out into the fresh forest air before you know it.
Travelling from New Milton

If you prefer a slower travel experience and want to stay in the area, the neighbouring town of New Milton is another excellent base. We set off from New Milton station, which is only a 10-minute train ride away from Brockenhurst.
The Perfect 1.5-Hour Brockenhurst Walking Route

Once you arrive at Brockenhurst station, your New Forest walking route begins immediately. This flat, gentle circular walk takes about 1.5 hours (around 5–6 km) and is suitable for all fitness levels—just make sure to wear comfortable trainers or walking shoes.
The Brockenhurst Water Splash & Wild Ponies (10 Mins from Station)

Heading out of the station, follow the High Street through the lovely village centre. Within 10 minutes, you’ll reach ‘The Water Splash’, a scenic ford where a shallow stream flows across the road.

Not long after leaving The Water Splash, a beautiful church came into view. It was St Saviour’s Church.
Strolling the Peaceful New Forest Footpaths
There are lots of walking routes in the New Forest which you can choose depending on your energy or feeling. This time, we walked from Brockenhurst to Sway railway station and took a train to go back to New Milton.

There are car parks dotted throughout the New Forest, and you often find yourself walking alongside roads as you exit or enter a village. In many places, there are gravel footpaths like this running alongside the roads.

The telephone box is being used as a book exchange point. The photo with the ponies has a very British feel to it, doesn’t it?

The New Forest is home not only to ponies, but also to cows and pigs.

Although it had been about three days since it last rained, there were still some muddy patches. We recommend wearing shoes that can get dirty, or ideally waterproof ones.

Although the New Forest is called a ‘forest’, you won’t necessarily be walking through dense woodland. Whilst there are areas of dense woodland, there are extensive grassy areas with only shrubs, as shown in the photo above, so do make sure you apply sun cream.

It was June at the time, so it wasn’t the heather season, but the New Forest is really beautiful when the heather is in full bloom and the landscape turns pink.

Although the New Forest has plenty of muddy patches, there aren’t many hills. As the path is almost entirely flat so it’s easy to walk along.
We headed towards the village of Sway, referring to the offline Maps.me app.

Until quite recently, parking was free, but it seems they’ve started charging for it recently.

We’ve reached the sign marking the entrance to Sway Village. The roads in the village are well paved. It’s just a short walk from here to Sway railway station.

As we walked along, we came across the post office in Sway Village. It was closed, but it looked so cute we had to snap a photo!

Because there’s only one train an hour to New Milton, when we arrived at Sway station we had to wait a little while and so we went for a short walk whilst we were waiting.
