If you want to experience the true heart of British culture, you have to spend time in a traditional pub. But rather than heading to the busy tourist traps, why not step inside the places where the locals actually go?
My family lives in New Milton, a charming town in Hampshire, South England. Whenever my wife and I come back here to stay, there are a few neighbourhood spots we always return to with my family.
In this post, I want to share three of our decent pubs around the New Milton area. Each one has its own unique character—from a cosy country pub at the edge of the ancient New Forest, to a relaxed town local, and a lively village spot just down the road. If you want to experience England like a local, these are the places to go.

The Rising Sun (Bashley): The Gateway to the Forest

Located just north of New Milton in the quiet area of Bashley, The Rising Sun sits right on the edge of the stunning New Forest National Park. Beautiful woodland walking trails start almost immediately outside the front door.
This is our go-to spot on a bright weekend. My wife and I love to go for a relaxing walk through the forest first, and then head straight over to the pub to unwind.

The best feature here is the massive beer garden. It has a fantastic outdoor play area for children, meaning it is always filled with a happy, lively atmosphere of local families and their dogs. Inside and out, they serve a great selection of traditional British cask ales, crisp craft beers, and refreshing non-alcoholic options. Sitting under the trees with a cold drink after a forest walk is the perfect way to practice slow travel.
Wheatsheaf Inn (New Milton): A Proper Town Local

Tucked away between the town centre and the beautiful cliffs of Barton-on-Sea, the Wheatsheaf Inn is what we call a “proper pub.” It is a classic, unpretentious neighbourhood establishment that hasn’t changed its authentic charm for years.

We don’t come here for special occasions; we come here for the simple comfort of everyday life. It’s the kind of place where my family decides, “Let’s skip cooking tonight, head down to the pub, and catch up.”
Because it is family-run, the welcome is always warm and genuine. Even on a quiet weekday evening, you will find friendly locals relaxing and chatting at the bar. They offer delicious, comforting pub food at very reasonable prices. Sitting out in their spacious garden on a summer evening, surrounded by the gentle hum of local conversation, gives you a real taste of daily British life.
Walkford (Walkford): Great Food and Lively Village Vibes

If you drive just a few minutes west of New Milton towards the Dorset border, you will find the quiet village of Walkford. Here sits The Walkford, a spacious and inviting pub managed by the well-known Greene King British pub group.

Whenever the family wants to gather for a hearty, satisfying meal or enjoy a vibrant dinner atmosphere, this is the place we choose.

The interior is incredibly spacious with plenty of comfortable seating, and there is a large car park, making it very accessible and welcoming for everyone. It is a vital hub for the local community, frequently hosting large family gatherings and celebrations. They serve fantastic grill menu options all day long. It combines the reliable comfort of a well-run pub group with the energetic charm of a classic village evening.
Summary: Pubs are the Heart of the Community
The three pubs we love around New Milton each offer something different: a peaceful forest escape, a relaxed neighbourhood hangout, and a lively spot for a great meal.
In the UK, a pub is so much more than just a place to get a drink. It is a social hub where families connect, friends meet, and the local community comes together. If you are travelling through South England, make sure to slow down, explore the New Milton area, and enjoy a pint at these wonderful local favourites.
