We stayed at a guesthouse near Jemeluk Bay, Amed Beach, Bali, for about 10 days. Here are some of the restaurants we used at that time.
Sunrise Cafe & Bungalows
This is the guesthouse where we stayed, although it was probably cheaper than usual as we stayed in January during off-peak season – Rp 250,000 per night for a double room without breakfast, and Rp 275,000 with breakfast for two people (negotiated directly, not through a hotel search website).
It has a good reputation as a restaurant as well and we had many meals here.
Mahi Mahi is a popular fish with white meat around here.
Pepes is a traditional Balinese cooking method where ingredients are wrapped in banana skin and steamed. Pepes Ikan (ikan means fish) is coconut-flavoured fish and savoury vegetables wrapped in banana skin and cooked.
Everything we had was delicious. It is nice to have stir-fried vegetables on the side. Stir-fried vegetables are also on the menu.
The owner and his wife speak good English. Fish dishes are cooked from a selection of the day’s fish.
WARUNG MAKAN BABI GULING PUDAK
This shop is located near Culik Village market (Traditional Market Culik Village) and offers pork dishes. We bought meals here as a takeaway.
Rp 20,000-25,000 for a set of roasted pork or skewers, vegetables and rice.
The dishes are well seasoned and you can enjoy a little bit of each dish. The portions are quite large. The lady spoke good English, so ordering was easy.
Open from morning until 1pm.
Warung Sari Asih
Satay (skewers) restaurant. There is space to eat in, but we took ours away.
As they are Indonesian-style skewers, the portions per skewer are small, but at Rp 10,000 for an order of seven skewers, they are reasonably priced. The menu also includes grilled fish and other classic dishes such as nasi goreng.
Catch & Grill warung
This is a trendy little shop on the Jemeluk Bay road, which we visited because of its good reputation on Google Maps.
The interior is also stylishly finished using natural materials. The atmosphere is likely to appeal to travellers.
The menu may be a little expensive than simple warungs, but there are lots of nice food and is very good value.
The presentation was beautiful too. The curry tasted good, with a good mix of vegetables, potatoes and fish.
However, we personally preferred the fish curry from Sunrise Café, which we mentioned earlier, as it had more aromatic flavours.
Traditional Market Culik Village
Although not a restaurant, we went to a nearby market to purchase fruit, which is shared here.
The market is livelier in the morning. All market vendors are friendly and approachable.
Dragon fruit Rp 15,000-20,000/kg; salak Rp 10,000/kg.
Salak is a fruit available widely in Indonesia. It does not last long, so it is recommended to eat it by the next day after buying.
