Ruteng was one of our stops while travelling across Flores in Indonesia.
After travelling from Labuan Bajo, we stayed in Ruteng for two nights and spent our time exploring the town, visiting several Catholic churches, walking through the local market and making a trip out to the famous Lingko Spider Web Rice Fields.
Ruteng feels very different from coastal Labuan Bajo. This is a cool highland town surrounded by green hills and farmland, and it offers a chance to see a more everyday side of Flores.
In this Ruteng travel guide, we share the places we visited, how we got around, where we ate and where we stayed.

What is Ruteng like?
Ruteng is a highland town in western Flores and the administrative capital of Manggarai Regency. It is also a popular stop for travellers making the overland journey east from Labuan Bajo.
The town itself is relatively compact, while some of the most interesting sights are in the surrounding countryside.
Compared with Labuan Bajo, Ruteng has a much cooler mountain atmosphere. Rather than focusing on beaches and boat trips, visitors can experience local markets, churches, farmland and Manggarai culture.
Old Cathedral in Ruteng
One of our first stops was Ruteng Old Cathedral.

Catholicism is an important part of life in Flores, and churches are a common sight as you travel across the island. Visiting the cathedral gave us a chance to see an important part of local life rather than simply another tourist attraction.
For us, the appeal was as much about seeing the town as it was about the building itself.
New Cathedral of Ruteng
We also visited the newer cathedral in Ruteng.

The cathedral is one of the prominent buildings in the town centre and reflects the strong Catholic heritage of the area.
Visiting both the old and new cathedrals gives you an interesting perspective on Ruteng and its religious heritage.
Ruteng Local Market
Another worthwhile stop is Ruteng’s local market.
This is a working local market rather than a tourist attraction, with fresh produce and everyday goods sold to local residents.
Markets are often one of the best places to experience everyday life when travelling, and Ruteng is no exception. Travel guides also list Ruteng Market among the town’s attractions.
If you enjoy photography and seeing how people actually live and shop, allow some time to simply wander around.
St. Vitalis Catholic Church Cewonikit
We also made our way to St. Vitalis Catholic Church Cewonikit.
The church is outside the immediate centre of town and was another opportunity to see the strong role that Catholic churches play in the local community.
Rather than trying to tick off a long list of conventional attractions, we enjoyed combining these churches with walks around Ruteng.
Lingko Spider Web Rice Fields
The highlight of our Ruteng sightseeing was the Lingko Spider Web Rice Fields.

These unusual rice fields are famous for their distinctive radial pattern, which resembles a giant spider web when viewed from above.
The pattern is not simply a visual design. It comes from the traditional Manggarai system of communal land allocation known as Lingko. Land is divided into sections radiating outwards from a central point, creating the distinctive pattern visible across the landscape.
The rice fields are one of the best-known attractions around Ruteng and are relatively accessible from town.
Getting to the Spider Web Rice Fields
For our visit, we used Maxim to get there.
On the way back, we took an angkot, the local shared minibus, back towards Ruteng.
Using different forms of transport gave us a more interesting experience than simply taking a private car both ways. It also meant we got to experience a little of the local transport system.
If you do not want to rent a motorbike, it is worth asking locally about combining ride-hailing and public transport for trips around Ruteng.
Where to Eat in Ruteng: Warung Se’i Babi
One of our favourite meals in Ruteng was at Warung Se’i Babi.

Se’i is a smoked meat dish associated with Nusa Tenggara, making it a particularly appropriate local speciality to try while travelling through the region.
We enjoyed a couple of meals here and would recommend putting Se’i Babi on your list if you want to try local food in Ruteng.
Where to Stay in Ruteng: Lovekend Homestay
We stayed at Lovekend Homestay during our time in Ruteng.

Our room was spacious, clean and recently renovated, and the mattress was comfortable.
The room had a private bathroom with a mandi and toilet.
There is no air conditioning, but Ruteng’s highland climate means that this was not a major issue for us.
For a reasonably priced stay in Ruteng, we found it a comfortable and practical base.
How to Spend Your Time in Ruteng
Ruteng works particularly well if you combine the sights in town with one or two trips into the surrounding countryside.
During our stay, we visited:
- Ruteng Old Cathedral
- The New Cathedral
- Ruteng Local Market
- St. Vitalis Catholic Church Cewonikit
- Lingko Spider Web Rice Fields
- Warung Se’i Babi
- Lovekend Homestay
Rather than rushing between attractions, we enjoyed taking our time, walking around town, visiting the churches and market, eating local food and then heading out to see the distinctive Lingko landscape.
Final Thoughts on Visiting Ruteng
Ruteng is easy to overlook when travelling across Flores because it is often treated simply as an overnight stop between Labuan Bajo and destinations further east.
For us, it was worth slowing down.
The Lingko Spider Web Rice Fields were the obvious highlight, but the churches, local market, food and everyday atmosphere of Ruteng were equally important to our experience.
If you are travelling overland through Flores, consider spending a night or two in Ruteng rather than treating it only as a transit point. It is a good place to experience the cooler highlands and a different side of Flores.
