When travelling across Papua, long connections or early morning flight transfers at Sentani International Airport (DJJ) in Jayapura are very common. Finding a clean, affordable, and stress-free transit hotel close to the runway helps ensure a smooth journey.
In January 2025, during a connection from Manokwari to Biak, we stayed overnight at Hotel Pelangi. Situated a mere 300 metres from the airport, this budget property turned out to be a spotless and exceptionally convenient choice for an overnight layover.
Here is our honest review of Hotel Pelangi in Jayapura, covering room comfort, bathroom facilities, local transport, and essential transit tips.

Location: 300 Metres from the Airport Terminal
The primary reason to pick Hotel Pelangi is its unbeatable location. It is situated just 300 metres from Jayapura’s Sentani Airport, making it easily walkable.
Free Shuttle Service & Host Hospitality
Although the terminal is just a short stroll away, the hotel thoughtfully offers a complimentary airport shuttle service. The owner is exceptionally friendly, welcoming, and speaks fluent English, which makes check-in and arranging early morning departures completely hassle-free.
- Front Desk Hours: The reception is open from 5:00 AM to 11:00 PM. Please note that the main doors are locked at 11:00 PM, so keep this in mind if you are arriving on a very late flight!
Surrounding Area & Getting Around
On the nearby main road (Jl. Raya Kamiri), you will find plenty of local eateries, warungs, and small shops to stock up on snacks and drinks. It is also very easy to flag down local shared taxis (angkot) along this road if you want to head into Jayapura city centre.

Rooms & Amenities: Simple, Clean & Powerful AC
We opted for a Double Room with an En-suite Bathroom (AC Room) for Rp 300,000 per night (~£15 / $19 USD), without breakfast included. Cheaper rooms with shared bathroom facilities are also available for budget backpackers.
In-Room Comfort
The room was remarkably clean and neatly arranged:
- Air Conditioning: The AC worked brilliantly, cooling the room quickly in Jayapura’s tropical heat.
- Furnishings: Equipped with a desk, chair, television, power extension cord, towel rack, mirror, bath towels, bar soap, and indoor slippers.
- Wi-Fi Speed: Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the hotel (both in the lobby and bedrooms). The connection was fast, reliable, and connected without any issues.
What to Bring (Missing Essentials)
- Drinking Water: No bottled water is provided in the room, but you can buy drinks at the shops next door. Coffee and tea are available for purchase at reception.
- Toilet Paper: Toilet paper is not provided in the room, so remember to pack your own toilet roll!
Bathroom Facilities: Traditional Mandi & Asian Toilet
It is important to set expectations for the bathroom setup at Hotel Pelangi. The en-suite bathroom follows a traditional Indonesian layout:
- No Western Toilet or Shower: There is no Western-style pedestal toilet, bathtub, or standard shower head. Instead, it features an Asian squat toilet and a traditional Mandi (bucket-and-ladle bathing system with cold water). There is no hot water.
- Cleanliness: Despite being rustic, our bathroom had been newly painted and was exceptionally clean. The water inside the Mandi basin was crystal clear, and even the plastic ladle bucket provided was brand new.
Hotel Layout & Smoking Areas
Smoking is strictly prohibited inside all guest bedrooms. However, the hotel provides dedicated outdoor smoking areas for guests at the front entrance as well as on the second-floor balcony.
Final Verdict: Is Hotel Pelangi Worth It for a Transit Stay?
If you are looking for a western-style luxury resort, Hotel Pelangi will not be for you. However, for a short overnight transit near Jayapura Airport, it is a fantastic, high-value choice.
For just Rp 300,000, you get a spotless room, freezing AC, super-fast Wi-Fi, a friendly English-speaking owner, and a location just steps from the runway. We would happily stay here again for any future airport connections in Papua!
