Things to Do in Vila, Atauro Island: Local Crafts, Viewpoints and Places to Eat

East Timor

Vila, on Atauro Island in Timor-Leste, is a place to explore beyond the beaches. During our stay, we visited a local doll-making workshop, walked up to a hilltop viewpoint, enjoyed a meal at a local restaurant and found a useful supermarket for everyday essentials.

In this guide, I share our experience of exploring Vila, including what to expect at each stop and a few practical tips for planning your own walk around the village.

Things to See in Vila, Atauro Island

1. Boneca de Atauro: A Local Doll-Making Workshop

Boneca de Atauro is a local workshop producing handmade dolls, with a shop right next to the production area. It is an interesting stop if you would like to see some of Atauro Island’s craft traditions and browse locally made products.

During our visit, we watched the team using sewing machines to add embroidered stitching to the dolls. Seeing part of the production process gave us a closer look at the work involved in making these items.

The shop sells more than dolls. We also found bags in various sizes, along with other products. If you are looking for a locally made souvenir from Atauro Island, it is well worth stopping by.  Really beautiful products!

2. Cave of the Immaculate Heart of Mary: A Hilltop Viewpoint

The Cave of the Immaculate Heart of Mary

The Cave of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is a religious site on a hill above Vila. The surrounding area also offers a wonderful viewpoint, making it a rewarding destination for anyone who enjoys exploring on foot.

From the centre of Vila, the walk takes approximately 40–50 minutes. Some sections of the road are paved, while others are rougher, so comfortable walking shoes are advisable.

The climb and walk take some effort, but the views make it worthwhile. It is a chance to see the village and its surroundings from a different perspective rather than spending all your time near the coast.

Bring drinking water, allow enough time for the return walk and avoid the hottest part of the day if possible.

Where to Eat in Vila

Hospedaria e Restaurante Manukoko Rek

Hospedaria e Restaurante Manukoko Rek

Hospedaria e Restaurante Manukoko Rek combines a restaurant and guesthouse, and the premises also include a training centre. We understood that the establishment was set up by nuns, although we did not independently verify its history.

We enjoyed the food during our visit. The dishes were tasty and attractively presented, making the meal a pleasant experience.

The main thing to be aware of is the waiting time. Our food took a while to arrive after we placed our order. Advance ordering is recommended, so it is worth arranging your meal beforehand if you are working to a schedule.

We ordered our food first and then crossed the road to visit Boneca de Atauro while we waited. This worked well for us, as the workshop and restaurant are directly opposite each other.

If you plan to visit both places, you could follow the same approach, provided the restaurant is happy to accommodate the timing.

Where to Shop in Vila

HANGARA Supermarket

HANGARA Supermarket

HANGARA is a relatively large supermarket in Vila, with a good range of products for a village shop. The staff were friendly, and we found it useful during our stay.

We stopped there several times to buy drinking water. It was a practical place to pick up everyday essentials without having to rely entirely on supplies from our accommodation.

If you are staying in Vila for a few days, it is worth knowing where HANGARA is, particularly if you need to replenish your water or other basic supplies.

Practical Tips for Exploring Vila

Vila is easy to explore at a relaxed pace, with opportunities to discover local crafts, enjoy a meal and see the village from above.

Boneca de Atauro and Hospedaria e Restaurante Manukoko Rek are directly opposite each other, so visiting them together makes sense. The Cave of the Immaculate Heart of Mary is further away and takes around 40–50 minutes to reach on foot from the village centre, so allow additional time for the return journey.

For the hilltop walk, bring enough water, wear suitable shoes and take your time, especially in hot weather. If you plan to eat at Manukoko Rek, consider ordering in advance to reduce the wait.

What I enjoyed about exploring Vila was the opportunity to experience more of Atauro Island beyond its coastline. From local craftsmanship to everyday shopping and the views from the hill, these small stops gave us a better feel for village life.

If you are staying on Atauro Island, set aside some time to walk around Vila and discover these places for yourself.
