Located off the northern coast of mainland Papua, Biak Island is a fascinating destination rich in WWII history, tranquil beaches, and untamed marine life. Unlike more commercialised parts of Indonesia, Biak remains delightfully off the beaten track.
During our journey through Papua, we stayed at Nirmala Beach Hotel and Resort, a beachfront property situated just west of Biak Town. Run by a charming American-Indonesian couple, this large resort offers a unique mix of rustic wooden charm, ocean views, and an on-site dive operation.

Location & Getting Around Biak
Nirmala Beach Hotel and Resort is located on the shores of Nirmala Beach, approximately 7 km west of Biak Airport (Frans Kaisiepo Airport) and 4 km from Biak town centre.
Getting There: Airport Transfers & Ride-Hailing
While the hotel offers an airport transfer service for a fee, we opted to use Maxim, a ride-hailing app that has recently launched on Biak Island.
- Maxim Cost: Rp 30,000 (~£1.50 / $2.00 USD) from the airport to the hotel.
- Local Transport Tip: Note that Grab does not work on Biak Island. Maxim is available, but because it is relatively new to the island, driver availability can be patchy depending on the time of day, and you may need to wait 10–15 minutes for a driver to accept your trip.

Getting Around
There are no supermarkets or restaurants within immediate walking distance, so you will need wheels to explore. Fortunately, the hotel provides scooter rentals for Rp 150,000 per day, which makes popping into town for dinner or exploring island viewpoints very straightforward.
The Beach & Weekend Vibe
Nirmala Beach itself does not have a wide sandy strip, but the hotel has set up plastic floating pontoons that make slipping into the calm ocean for a swim very easy. On weekend evenings, local families gather along the shore to watch the sunset, creating a lively, authentic community atmosphere.
The Property: Classic Wooden Charm & Ongoing Renovations
The resort is housed in a large, impressive building featuring beautiful internal timber framing and polished wooden floors. However, it is an older property that is currently undergoing much-needed upgrades and repairs here and there.
The Room & Comfort
We stayed in a Spacious Double Room with an En-suite Bathroom and Sea View.
- Bed & AC: The mattress was firm and remarkably comfortable, ensuring a very restful night’s sleep. The air conditioning was modern, quiet, and worked perfectly.
- Floors & Furnishings: The original timber floors look lovely, but they are showing their age with cracks and noticeable soft spots underfoot in certain areas. The rest of the furniture is somewhat worn, though functional.
- Lighting: Room lighting was fairly dim at night, giving it a soft, muted ambience.
- Provided Amenities: Bottled drinking water, tissues, toilet paper, clean bath towels, soap, and toothbrush sets were provided. Water dispensers are situated in the corridors, and an electric kettle with complimentary tea and coffee is available 24/7 next to the front desk.
The Bathroom
The bathroom was exceptionally large :
- Facilities: Includes a toilet, washbasin, and a hot-water shower. There is no bathtub or partition separating the shower from the toilet.
- Hot Water: Hot water worked well, though the shower fittings showed some rust.
- Useful Touch: The staff provided a large bucket, which proved very handy for rinsing out salt water and sand from our swimwear after snorkelling.
Breakfast & On-Site Dining
Breakfast is included in the room rate and served from 6:00 AM in the dining area—ideal for early-morning departures or tours.
- Breakfast Menu: A simple, tasty local fare consisting of classic Nasi Goreng (Indonesian fried rice), freshly cooked eggs, and pickled vegetables.
- Lunch & Dinner: While there was no printed menu during our stay, the hotel has a dedicated chef. You can order meals verbally at the front desk, and we found the freshly prepared dishes to be delicious and reasonably priced.
On-Site Dive Centre & Snorkelling Tours
One of the highlights of staying at Nirmala Beach Hotel is the on-site dive centre, managed directly by the American co-owner. They offer scuba diving, snorkelling trips, and custom land tours around Biak.
We booked a half-day snorkelling tour to another secluded beach on the island through the dive centre for Rp 1.5 million for two people (~£75 / $95 USD). It was a wonderful, hassle-free way to explore Biak’s vibrant underwater coral reefs with experienced local guidance.

Wi-Fi & Service
- Wi-Fi Performance: Free Wi-Fi is provided throughout the property. While signal stability varied inside our bedroom, the connection speed was fast and reliable in the ground-floor reception lounge.
- Hospitality: The local Papuan staff were warm, polite, and helpful, speaking basic English. The owners speak fluent English and are exceptionally welcoming, charming hosts who are always happy to share local insights.
Pricing & Final Verdict
We stayed here in January 2025, paying Rp 550,000 per night (including breakfast) (~£28 / $35 USD) via direct negotiation with the hotel.
While the property is ageing and due for a comprehensive overhaul—meaning prices will likely increase once renovations are complete—it offers fantastic value for money in its current state.
If you are looking for a peaceful seafront base with great beds, cold AC, an on-site dive centre, and genuinely hospitable owners, Nirmala Beach Hotel and Resort is a lovely choice for your Biak adventure.
