For a fantastic, casual dinner in Cambridge, my family brought us to The Red Bull Newnham. Located just a short stroll away from the bustling city centre, this pub has a wonderfully warm, neighbourhood feel that instantly makes you feel welcome.

We had Double Star

If you can, try to plan your visit for a Monday evening. They run a brilliant local special: two freshly baked pizzas and one side dish for just £20. In a city where eating out can get quite expensive, this is an absolute bargain. The pizzas have a delicious, crispy crust with generous toppings, pairing perfectly with their selection of craft ales. It is the ideal spot for a relaxed and budget-friendly meal.

4 More Cambridge Pubs Highly Recommended by Locals

Beyond our pizza night, my Cambridge-based family highlighted four other outstanding pubs that each offer something unique. Whether you are looking for traditional British food or a deep dive into local history, add these to your travel list.

1. A Cosy Neighbourhood Hidden Gem: The Free Press

Tucked away in a quiet residential street, The Free Press is a beautifully traditional pub that feels like a peaceful sanctuary from the busy tourist tracks. Housed in a building that was once a printing press, it features a classic interior and a lovely little courtyard. It is highly rated by locals for its excellent quality pub food and perfectly poured pints.

2. A Traditional Pub with a Thai Twist: Luk Thai at The Cricketers

From the outside, The Cricketers looks like your quintessential British pub. Step inside, however, and you will find a wonderful surprise: it is home to Luk Thai, serving exceptionally authentic Thai cuisine. The contrast between the classic wooden pub decor and the vibrant, aromatic flavours of Thai curries makes this a massive favourite for local residents looking for something different.

3. Great Beers and a Vibrant Local Vibe: Kingston Arms

If you want to experience where Cambridge residents actually go to wind down after work, the Kingston Arms is the place to be. This pub is renowned for its rotating selection of high-quality beers and hearty dishes. It boasts a genuinely friendly, community-focused atmosphere that is hard to find in the more commercialised parts of town.

4. Where History Was Made: The Eagle

No trip to Cambridge is complete without stopping by The Eagle. As one of the city’s oldest pubs, dating back to the 14th century, it is steeped in incredible history. This is the exact pub where scientists James Watson and Francis Crick famously announced they had discovered the secret of life—the double helix structure of DNA. It is the perfect place to enjoy a classic plate of fish and chips surrounded by world-changing history.

Summary: Enjoy the Authentic Cambridge Pub Experience

Finding the right place to eat and drink can completely transform your trip. By skipping the tourist crowds and heading where the locals go, you are guaranteed great memories, fantastic atmosphere, and delicious food.
